The Best DIY Avocado Face Mask for Dry Skin

Need a little skin pick-me-up, but no time to come to Spa Sophia? Opt for one of Spa Sophia best DIY face masks! While it may not be the same as our groundbreaking facials and relaxing spa experiences, it keeps your skin healthy in between treatments. This delicious DIY avocado face mask recipe is one of Spa Sophia esthetician Natarsha's favorites. It's intensely nourishing, softening and great for those with dry, parched or dehydrated skin.

DIY Avocado Face Mask Recipe

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1tbsp raw honey
  • 1tbsp raw Shea butter
  • 1tsp powdered raw cacao
  • 1tsp vegetable glycerine
  • 1tsp raw coconut oil

Optional but recommended:

  • 1 vitamin E capsule pierced and squeezed in
  • 10 drops of organic rose hip oil
  • 5 drops vanilla absolute
  • 3 drops black pepper essential oil

DIY Avocado Face Mask Instructions

Whip all ingredients together into a smooth, creamy mask and apply to face after cleansing and exfoliating, lever on for 20 minutes. Keep remaining mask in fridge and use as needed. If you're vegan you can substitute agave nectar for the honey. The oils are optional but give this mask an extra sensory dimension and extra nutrients for the skin.

Esthetician's Comments

"The avocado is super rich in nutrients and oils, while the honey and raw coconut oil provide a soothing and mild anti-microbial effect. The vegetable glycerine is a humectant, helping to pull moisture in to the skin, the cacao is rich in antioxidants. Honey and agave are hydrating, Shea butter is nourishing and softening. Vitamin E aids in cellular repair and rosehip oil is rich in beta carotene and provitamin A, which has been shown to help reduce the risk of cancer in premenopausal women."

Best Products for Dry Skin

Winter weather, hot air, aging: They can all lead to dry skin. On the upside: Dry skin is less prone to acne breakouts and blackheads. The downside: It's more prone to fine lines, irritation, flaking and red spots. Skin naturally gets dryer as we age, but that doesn't mean we can't remedy it. Here are the best products for dry skin... First of all: Make sure you actually have dry skin. You can have the best products for dry skin, but that won't help if you're actually not a dry skin type. Knowing your skin type is the first step towards proper skin care. Find out what your skin type is here.

Second: Know your ingredients. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone and ceramides are the go-to ingredients for dry skin. They pull water to the skin and keep it there. The best products for dry skin are those with at least one of these ingredients. Here are some of our favorites:

Exfoliators & Scrubs

Exfoliating twice a week is good for most skin types. The best exfoliating and scrubbing products for dry skin are products that are gentle and moisturizing. At Spa Sophia we're a fan of:

Jurlique Daily Exfoliating Cream

A non-granular exfoliating cream is recommended for every day use. It cleans deeply to lift away dead skin cells and leaves skin looking smooth and radiant

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

Epicuren Apricot Scrub

A hydrating scrub designed specifically for dry and mature skin types. Finely ground and polished apricot seed and walnut shells slough away surface dryness and debris to reveal a smooth and fresh complexion

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

Obviously the most important part of keeping dry skin healthy is moisturization. Here's a selection of some of the best moisturizing products for dry skin:

Epicuren Hydro Plus Moisturizer

A rich crème that drenches the skin in moisture while remaining lightweight and mild. This natural, indulging blend helps protect against dehydration for a soft, healthy complexion.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream

A rich, moisturising cream, with a powerful combination of emollients helps to deeply hydrate, and helps restore suppleness, while protecting against environmental aggressors. Leaves skin feeling smooth, moisturised and comfortable.

Hydrating ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

Toners & Mists

Mists and toners are great to keep with you and spray on throughout the day. Especially when working in air conditioned offices or when travelling to dry climates. Here are the best toner and mist products for dry skin:

Epicuren Colostrum Hydrating Mist

A nutrient-rich mist that renews, restores, and increases hydration. Rich in life-supporting immune factors, growth factors, amino acids, and vitamins in a base of pure glacial water, this exhilarating complex is a revitalizing solution.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin

Jurlique Lavender Hydrating mist

A daily replenishing mist with the calming scent of lavender that tones and soothes the complexion. Ideal for dry skin.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

For an extra moisture boost, serums are the way to go. They can be applied underneath your regular moistutizer for more intense hydration.

Epicuren PhytO2 Hydration Serum

A potent, yet light, age-fighting therapy. This exclusive technology utilizes rare components of a botanical blend rich in aloe, proteins, and amino acids; this botanical blend will deeply hydrate the skin, while demanding it to function at a more youthful level.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin

Intraceuticals Opulence Hydration Gel

Replenishes vital moisture while delivering skin brightening actives. Use as the second step in Intraceuticals’ 3 Step Hyaluronic Layering for a more luminous skin tone.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & hyaluronic acid

Intraceuticals Rejuvenate Hydration Gel

Instantly hydrates, providing a reservoir of nutrients to the skin which visibly address the signs of ageing. Works synergistically with Rejuvenate Daily Serum, dramatically enhancing skin appearance.

Hydrating Ingredients: Dimethicone

If you have dry skin, wash your face with a cleanser only at the end of the day. Use water in the mornings, so you don't strip away too much oil. The following cleansers are gentle and hydrating, making them some of the best cleansing products for dry skin.

Intraceuticals Rejuvenate Cleansing Gel

A lightweight gel cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the skin. Removes impurities, make-up and excess oil, restoring the skin’s natural balance. Sloughs away dull, dead skin cells.

Hydrating Ingredients: Dimethicone

Epicuren Apricot Cleanser

A gentle, non-foaming cleanser mild enough to use on the eye area. Rich oils make this a great makeup remover and help prevent the loss of moisture during the cleansing process.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

Jurlique Replenishing Foaming Cleanser

A replenishing foaming cleanser for dry skin that lifts away surface impurities to leave the complexion feeling fresh and clean.

Hydrating Ingredients: Glycerin & essential oils

How To Stay Healthy During The Holidays

Oh, the holidays. We look forward to them all year, but they can also stress us out. And we're not just talking about the stress of organizing. The abundance of unhealthy food and overeating can be a source of anxiety. Most people gain 1 to 3 pounds over the holidays. Not a big drama on its own, except that many people never lose those extra pounds. How do we make the holidays a little healthier, so we can enjoy it guilt-free. Here are 7 tips...

1. Exercise More the Weeks Before

How not to worry about the small weight gain during Thanksgiving and Christmas? By shedding some extra weight beforehand! Start doing adding some cardio exercises the weeks before, lengthen your existing workouts, and/or eat smaller portions than usual. Possibly the simplest and most reliable way to stay healthy on track during the holidays, and diminish guilt.

2. Throw in Walks

You may not have time or motivation to go do full workouts, but a nice stroll can be very fitting holiday activity! Take the family for a walk in nearby nature and burn calories while enjoying the fall and winter weather. The cosier it is inside afterwards! If you are at a big party, there are always some people who are down for a little after-dinner walk.

how to stay healthy and guilt free during holidays los angeles spa sophia3. Eat Beforehand

While you might be tempted to skip eating all day on Thanksgiving and Christmas to "save" some calories that way, it is actually wiser to eat something small before. Research has found this prevents people from binging on food. So don't let yourself go hungry, eat a fulfilling breakfast with a small portion of protein.

4. Choose Calmly

When you see all that food everywhere it's tempting to load up your plate with everything, but try to take a moment before. What dishes are there? What are your favorites? Which dishes are special? Go for only the things you really like and that you don't already have weekly. There is no need to try everything. And know that plain turkey, pumpkin pie and roasted veggies are healthier than gravy loaded red meat, chocolate cake and bean casseroles.

5. Be Mindful

When you do eat, savor! Put your fork down after every bite and eat consciously. Perhaps have a sip of water every few bites. Be present in the moment and really enjoy your food. It takes your mind about 20 minutes to realize you're full, so don't rush. Talking to people is also great to take your mind off the food. Traverse the room, speak to all those you haven't seen for a while. Enjoy!

6. Drink Water

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. It detoxes, helps move your food down to digestive tract, and also makes you feel satiated more quickly. If you can, try to drink water instead of soda, sugary juices, and alcoholic beverages. Drinking water on top of those is still a great idea, though. Add a little lemon or lime juice for an extra kick.

7. Use Healthy Holiday Recipes

You may not be able to control what others bring to the table, but you can control what you bring, so make it worth your while. There are many healthy holiday recipes around, but here are some quick tips:

  • Grill, roast, broil, stir-fry, poach and steam food instead of frying or deep frying.
  • Season turkey and other meat overnight with spices, rather than using creamy, heavy sauces
  • Use fat-free chicken broth for gravy.
  • Use fruit purees instead of butter and oil for baked goods.
  • Use plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream for creamy dips, mashed potatoes, and casseroles.

Need a little relief from all the holiday craziness? Spa Sophia is offering 20% off all Zents products with the purchase of a Zents massage! Find out more here.

What Skin Type Are You? Find Out!

The first step towards improving your skin care is knowing your skin type. At Spa Sophia we always do an extensive skin consultation with clients, so we can determine which treatments and products are best for them. We recommend having professional estheticians look at your skin, but if you're unable to come to the spa or are in need of an instant answer, we still want to help. Want to find out what skin type you are? Read on!

Skin Type Test

Splash your clean face with water and dry it gently. Then press one thin peace of paper - such as rice paper - against your forehead and and one against your cheek. Now use the following skin type information to determine your skin type.

Skin Types

Traditionally we divide skin into five types: normal, combination, dry, oily and sensitive. We should note that skin types can change as we age though, and are affected by things like temperature, humidity and hormonal fluctuations. Therefore repeat the skin type test every season or every time you move to a new climate.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is most common during puberty, and is caused by an increased production of sebum. While it can be troublesome in adolescence, there's an upside: Oily skin ages better! So less wrinkles for you.  Here's how to recognize an oily skin type:

Skin Type Test Result

The piece of paper sticks to all areas of the face, and is translucent after.

Oily Skin Traits

  • Large pores.
  • Prone to breakouts, acne and blackheads.
  • Shiny complexion.

Skin Care Tips for Oily Skin

  • Exfoliate twice a week (see our favorite products here).
  • Wash your face with cleansers specifically made for oily/ acne-prone skin. The Clarisonic Acne Brush Head is a great option too.
  • Only wash your face with water in the morning to prevent setting off more oil production
  • Use only non-comedogenic skin products and make-up, as they don't clog pores.

Dry Skin

Skin naturally dries out when aging, and is therefore more common in people over 35. The benefit is that breakouts will become much less frequent, the downside more visible fine lines. Here's how to recognize dry skin:

Skin Type Test Results

The piece of paper doesn't stick to your skin, and comes up clean afterwards.

Dry Skin Traits

  • Small pores.
  • Prone to flaking, fine lines, and red spots.
  • Skin feels tight, especially after cleansing.

Skin Care Tips for Dry Skin:

  • Keep a spray bottle with you.
  • Use gentle, creamy, non drying, soap-free cleansers. Epicuren Apricot Cream Cleanser is a great example.
  • Use a humidifier if your home or office is dry.
  • Use both night and day creams to moisturize (See our favorite moisturizers here).

Combination Skin

While many people think they have dry or oily skin, combination skin is actually the most common skin type.  Here's how to recognize a combination skin:

Skin Type Test Results

The piece of paper doesn't stick and comes up clean in some areas, but sticks and becomes greasy from other areas (most likely the T-Zone).

Combination Skin Traits

  • Oily T-Zone that's prone to breakouts.
  • Dry skin around the eyes, cheeks and temples.
  • Skin that changes with the season or climate.
  • Medium pores, possibly larger on forehead and cheeks.

Skin Care Tips for Combination Skin

Skin care for combination skin varies per season, climate and/or area of the face. The trick is recognizing the trouble spots, and treating them accordingly. Here are some tips:

  • Exfoliate twice a week (see our favorite exfoliates and scrubs here).
  • Use soap free cleansers, and only clean your face twice a day, unless you have perspired excessively. Jurlique's Soothing Foaming Cleanser is a good option.
  • Moisturize your dry spots with oil free moisturizers  throughout the day.
  • Use our tips for dry and oily skin for the dry and oily areas.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin shares a lot of traits with dry skin, buts is a little more extreme. Here's how to recognize a combination skin:

Skin Type Test Results

The piece of paper doesn't stick to your skin, and comes up clean afterwards.

Sensitive Skin Traits

  • Thin skin.
  • Small pores.
  • Prone to irritation, flaking and red spots.
  • Reacts badly to lot of cosmetics and skin products.

Skin Care Tips for Dry Skin

One of the most challenging things for sensitive skin is finding the right products. Luckily many stores have a return policy. Signing up for receiving testers from skin care companies can also help. Spa Sophia can also help you with individual product recommendations if you have sensitive skin.

Normal Skin

Although called "normal," not many people are actually blessed with this skin type . Here's how to recognize a normal skin:

Skin Type Test Results

The piece of paper doesn't stick to your skin, but would if you press harder. It comes up clean or with very little oil.

Normal Skin Traits

  • Barely visible pores.
  • Few imperfections.
  • Bright, even complexion.

Skin Care Tips for Normal Skin

Normal skin doesn't require much additional or special skin care. Just get the basics straight, such as applying SPF every day, cleaning your face twice a day, and moisturizing whenever the climate gets colder and dryer.

Skincare in Your 30s

skincare 30s los angeles spa sophia abbot kinney blvd veniceA good skincare routine requires a little bit of discipline, but most of all: educating yourself. Luckily Spa Sophia is here to help you with that. Skincare in your 20s shouldn't be the same as skin care in your 50s. So what is the best skincare routine for each age group? We'll tell you! Last month we went in depth about skincare in your 20s, this month we'll look into skin care in your 30s... No matter how well you've taken care of your skin, in your thirties cell turnover will start to slow down and collagen will decrease. This will make your skin thinner, duller and less elastic. Fine lines and wrinkles may start to show, especially around the eyes and mouth. Not to worry though, you can still have a beautiful skin without any cosmetic surgery. Just follow these guidelines for skincare in your 30s...

Moisturize & Sunscreen

Just like in your 20s, for skincare in your 30s it's important to keep protecting your skin from the sun. You don't have to go for a higher SPF level, though. As we explained in our article about sunscreen, after SPF 15 there's little difference in effectiveness. Just make sure you keep using broad spectrum sunscreen/sunblock. Your 30s are also the time to invest in a heavier moisturizer, see our favorites here.

Anti-Aging Creams

Unlike in your 20s, where we recommend you focus mostly on prevention, in your 30s it's time to start investing in a good anti-aging cream. As explained in our previous article, Retinol is one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients around. Opt for the prescription kind, or - if that's too harsh for your skin - get an over the counter cream with retinol. Epicuren's Retinol Complex is one of our favorites. It's available at our webshop as well as the spa.

Gentle Cleansers

Cleaning your skin is always important, and skincare in your 30s is no exception. But in your 30s make sure to always opt for gentle cleansers. Especially at first, Retinol can be quite irritating, so it's important to be gentle to your skin. Use gentle, soapless cleansers such as Cetaphil or one of our recommended products.

Eye Cream

Fine lines and wrinkles will most likely start around your eyes, which is why you should give the skin in that area extra attention. In your 30s, invest in a good eye cream. During the day, wear one that's moisturizing and rich in antioxidants to protect from environmental damage. During the night, wear one with Retinol. If you often have dark circles, look for creams with hydroquinone, vitamin C and brightening ingredients. If puffiness is an issue for you, eye creams with caffeine are the way to go.

If you're using Retinol based products, you won' t need too much extra exfoliation. If you don't however, skincare in your 30s can benefit from some increased scrubbing and exfoliation. Get a peel at Spa Sophia, or use at home peels with salicilyc or glycolic acid. If you'd rather use a scrub, then opt for ones with synthetic microbeads and stay away from harsh scrubs. See our favorite at home peels and scrubs in our webshop.

Hopefully this will help you create a better skincare regimen! Obviously different skin types have different needs. Want personalized advice? Come by Spa Sophia at 1027 Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice, e-mail us, or call us at (310) 564 6676.
