Skin Care Tips From Esthetician Kimberly Cole

Our estheticians are full of knowledge and they gladly dispense it for you at the spa. Not near Venice, or in need of a little refresher? No worries, we'll share their wisdom here! Up this time: our longtime esthetician Kimbery. Coming from a nutritional point of view with the skin, Kim looks to Dr. Gerson’s approach to caring for the body: Most issues can be linked to dehydration, toxicity and/or malnutrition. Kim has worked and toured with internationally known celebrities since 2002, customizing treatments for their skin and body care. See her skin care advice below!

1. What are the 5 skincare products every woman should own?

  • A gentle cleanser: Rarely will I suggest a cleanser with AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) for ongoing use in Los Angeles' climate, which is a desert. WHY? Helping the acid mantel heal and restore is the most important part in skincare. Your cleanser should be your BFF product. One of my favorites is Hylunia’s Creamy Cleanser used with a Clarisonic.
  • A clarisonicPeople have a lot of questions about wether or not they should use them, this is why I’m for them: If you have ever used a Sonicare toothbrush (same family company) you can feel the difference in cleanliness and polish of your teeth. It’s immediate, and it makes it hard to ever return to an inferior clean/polish. You get a gentle massage - which helps with micro-circulation - and a clean polish, getting rid of makeup, sweat, SPF and keratin build up without the possibility of dryness or a reaction to ingredients. Vasalating 300 times a second, this gentle polishing preps the skin for proper hydration and product penetration. Also, the brushes are made to have no cuticles to avoid bacteria build up.
  • Hylunia’s Hyaluronic Acid: Hydration is the first step in good skin care. The definition of hydration is the supply and retention of adequate water in biological tissues. If you are serious about keeping your skin young then you must bump up and retain the water content in your skin’s cells! Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is great for this because it holds 1800 times its weight in hydration (Aloe holds 300-400 times its weight). It's a fat chubby molecule that insulates the skin with hydration and creates a climate control. It’s the best solution for redness, dehydrated or irritated skin and is the perfect companion for traveling. Hylunia’s HA is made specifically for sensitive skin types, though it's beneficial for a whole spectrum of conditions. Their products come in different weights to be used alone or under a cream.
  • Rotation Diet Products: These are your treatment products such as AHA /BHA, vitamin C, retinols, Peptides, Herb infused oils/serums (like ISUN’s). Just like how in your diet you can't get all your nutritional needs from just one type of food, in your skin care you can't get them all from just one product. This of course is where customizing for each client comes in.
  • Protection with an SPF: I prefer a Non Nano Zinc – Zinc is a mineral, and aides the immune system. It is prescribed by doctors in the healing of acne and helps to sooth inflamed, irritated skin as found in calamine lotions and FDA approved for babies in diaper rash creams. Zinc protects from UVA and UVB and a larger UV spectrum than Titanium dioxide. I prefer non nano minerals because they don't cross the blood barrier. Applying a trace mineral like Zinc or Titanium in nano form everyday could create a possibility of toxicity, like mercury or iron.

1. What skincare ingredient should you avoid?

It depends on wether it’s an everyday product or a once in a while product. I’m not a fan of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It’s usually found in cleansers and toothpaste, which are everyday products. It strips and irritates the skin (and gums) which leads to sensitivity and weakens the skin’s ability to heal. This can contribute to breakouts, even when it's in your toothpaste. I also don't use artificial fragrances because they are a large cause of skin irritations. I stay away from Lanoline, which tends to be in makeup and can cause clogging. Finally I stay away from parabens, which are used as preservatives and have been known to show up in breast tissue and are sometimes linked to hormone disruption.

3. What is the best skincare for the day?

Always make sure you hydrate, then protect if you are going to be in the sun. I prefer my hydration and SPF separate. Another product great for the day is Vitamin C which helps to protect against cellular damage. We carry some of the very best stable forms of Vitamin C in our products such as Hylunia, Epicuren and ISUN’s.

4. What is the best skincare for the night?

This is where your treatment products are used, so it depends if it’s anti-aging or acne we're treating. Here in Southern California we are in a desert so I would suggest using extra hydration because all skin care needs to start with this very important step. Proper hydration and using a moisturizer are not always the same thing. I prefer my clients to bring in what they are using so we can really figure out their best plan of action. I sometimes suggest getting a humidifier as an aid to receive more hydration when you sleep.

5. What is the best skin care remedy for acne breakouts?

Acne can be caused by lots of different things and can happen in your teens or during menopause, and each would be treated differently. But you never want to overly dry out the skin, so beyond gentle cleansing and exfoliating I have had great success with Tuel’s Organic Colloidal Sulphur products, such as the gel or the mask with zinc. I have also found that sugar plays a big part. As a professional tool, I have been using a little secret for years that kills bacteria, viruses, yeast, etc. while hydrating and helping to completely heal the skin. It's low PH electrolyzed water.

6. How often should I get a facial?

That depends on what we are trying to accomplish. For upkeep, one every 4 to 6 weeks is good. But depending on the client and their goals, we could do a facial everyday or twice a week. Spa Sophia's Facial Boot Camp is a really good way of starting and sustaining a facial regime. In it we combine Micro-current treatments, Cold Laser Therapy/LED Light facials, and Highly Refined Peels that are mixed for your skin type. The Oxygen Infusion Facial is also a great example of a facial that could be done multiple times a week for special events, or even daily. Unlike many spa's we use the same Intraceuticals system for our Oxygen Facial that celebrities like Madonna use before events, photo shoots or on tour. The Oxygen Facial uses Hyperbaric Oxygen to gently nourish your skin’s cells with antioxidants, hydration, Vitamin C or Collagen Boosters. It creates a glowing, visibly younger looking skin instantly!

The Benefits of Facial Peels

Facial peels, also known as chemical peels, are quite the rage in Los Angeles, and Spa Sophia has been offering Los Angeles facial peels since the very start. Our facial peels are made of 100% natural products and are available both separately with our "Facial Peel" as well as part of our "Signature Plus Facial" and "Epicuren Facial." Facial Peels can produce amazing results for acne, scarring and aging and uneven skin. Want to know more about facial peels and their benefits? Read on!

facial peel los angeles spa sophia before after venice abbot kinneyWhat is a Facial Peel?

A facial peel consists of the application of a solution that contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids are found in things like sugar cane, fruits and dairy so can be all natural, but are also made synthetically. Spa Sophia offers the natural kind of facial peel. The hydroxy acids are applied to the skin and left on for a certain amount of time, dependent on how sensitive your skin is and what results you want. There are three kinds of facial peels: A superficial one, a medium one, and a deep one. The deep one can only be done on an inpatient basis, that's why Spa Sophia offers the superficial and medium facial peels.

How Does a Facial Peel Work?

A facial peel works by dissolving the material in your skin that holds skin layers together. This causes the bonds to break and the outer layers of your skin to peel, making way for brand new, healthy skin cells. Depending on the kind of peel you get, skin may peel off for several days after your facial peel. A peel doesn't hurt, but can be a little bit uncomfortable. The discomfort ends as soon as the peeling solution is washed off your skin though.

What Are the Facial Peel Benefits?

facial peel benefits los angeles spa sophia before after venice abbot kinneyFacial peel benefits can be far reaching and life changing. Facial peels can really diminish acne scarring, sun spots, fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, uneven skin tone, and leave you with a glowing, new skin. In fact, facial peels can produce the same effects as laser treatment. Not all peels have equally strong effects though. Multiple facial peels are suggested to benefit from the best results.

Is a Facial Peel For All Skin Types?

Superficial facial peels are fine for all skin types, but the deeper facial peels are not recommended for people with very sensitive or colored skin. Ask Spa Sophia for a free consultation to see if a facial peel is a good option for you.

What Are the Side Effects of a Facial Peel?

Facial peels cause your skin to peel, which will leave your skin raw and red. There may in some cases also be some irritation and swelling. Especially in the sensitive areas around the eyes. Depending on the deepness of your peel it can take up to a week for your skin to fully heal. During this time it's strongly recommended that you avoid sun exposure, or at least wear very strong sunblock. This is to prevent skin discoloration, of which there is a small chance after a facial peel.

For superficial peels, these side effects are nearly non existent though. With our professional, experienced estheticians as well as the appropriate aftercare on op that, the risk of these side effects is also minimal for deeper peels. We always test your skin beforehand, to see if you have any strong or allergic reactions.

Revolutionary New Treatment: DNA CryoStem Cell Facial

We have a big passion for staying on top of the latest scientific breakthroughs in the industry, and we're thrilled to introduce our new DNA CryoStem Cell Facial to you! This revolutionary treatment is based on Nobel Prize winning research and was introduced by Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Ronald Moy. It was initially only available at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village in Los Angeles, but now Spa Sophia offers the DNA CryoStem Cell Facial as well! Book one now and get $50 off your first DNA facial. Want to know more about this truly groundbreaking treatment that's making name as a non invasive alternative to a facelift? Read on...

The Role of DNA in Aging

Why does our skin get wrinkled over time? Because our cells get older, and as they get older they start cooperating less well. They lose efficiency, get damaged, and even die. This all has to do with DNA. Every cell in your body contains DNA, which contains not just the blueprint of a specific cell, but of your entire being.

Nobel Prize winning Professor Alexis Carrel and Swiss Doctor Niehans of the Clarens Clinic then made a stunning discovery while doing research on embryo extracts: They found that when and old cell comes into contact with a new cell, the new cell reprograms that old cell, making it function like new. Cells do this by exchanging DNA.

What Are Stem Cells?

So new cells are very useful for rejuvenating old cells, like skin cells. The difficulty with new cells though, is that they are extremely rare. Cells take on specific roles very early on: They become blood cells, brain cells and skin cells for example, all before we're even born. And once a cell has taken on a function, you can't "re-assign" it. That's where stem cells come in. Stem cells are cells that aren't assigned to a task yet. They contain flawless DNA information, and are able to become every cell they come in contact with.

dna cryostem cell facial los angeles spa sophia venice abbot kinneyWhere Do DNA Cryo Stem Cells Come From?

The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial's stem cells are gained from bovine (cow) amniotic fluid. But don't worry about the cows; They live on a free-range farm in the French Alps, receive organic feed and are hormone, steroid and antibiotic free. The amniotic procedure is also painless, and the cows replenish their stem cells within 8 hours. The stem cells are then stored cryogenically, aka frozen. This is because at medium or high temperatures the cells decay and lose their value.

The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial

The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial is 100% natural, FDA approved, and chemical and preservative free. It starts off with a thorough cleanse. After that you'll receive a microdermabrasion: a deep exfoliation of epidermal skin cells with the help of tiny crystals. This will enable the CryoStem Cell serum to penetrate the skin better and deeper. Then DNA's CryoStem Cell serum is applied. This serum consists of organic vitamins, minerals, essential fats, enzymes, natural antioxidants and stem cells. The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial lasts 60 minutes costs $250. Spa Sophia now offers $50 off for first time DNA facials! Book now.

DNA CryoStem Cell Facial Results

Because the stem cells will adapt to your skin and restore and reprogram your old skin cells, your skin will not only feel younger, it will be younger. The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial has been clinically proven to enhance skin cell growth by 71%. This process will last for days after your treatment, peaking at 6 days. It's not without reason DNA CryoStem Cell Facial is being helmed as the non invasive alternative to facelifts. The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial remedies wrinkles, fine lines, aging spots, scars, acne scars, bags under the eyes, uneven complexity and even laxness of skin in the neck and chest area.

How Many DNA CryoStem Cell Facial Treatments Do I Need?

Results are immediate, and keep increasing over 6 days. However, to also effect the deeper layers of skin and get the best long term results, it's recommended that you get 6 treatments over two months. Each treatment will progressively increase results, and after 6 treatments most layers of the skin will have been improved. After that occasional treatments as a booster are optional.

DNA Facial After Care

The serum used in the DNA CryoStem Cell Facial will continue to sink into your skin throughout the night. That's why we recommend that you don't work out, wash, or put on make-up after your DNA Facial.

The DNA CryoStem Cell Facial results are virtually unparalleled and can't be achieved with any regular skin care products. Want to schedule a DNA CryoStem Cell Facial now? Book one online or call us at (310) 564 6676, or send us an email!

Everything You Should Know About Collagen & Collagen Facials

Pretty much every commercial for facial creams mentions it: collagen. Collagen benefits the skin by rejuvenating it, that's why Spa Sophia offers collagen facials in its Los Angeles spa. Not all collagen products have the anti-aging effects of collagen facials though. We believe that it's important to educate our clients on beauty, so they can select beauty products that actually work and maximize the results of our treatments. For that reason we'd like to tell you a little bit about collagen, its part in anti-aging, collagen facials an collagen facial benefits. Read and learn!

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein - a large biological molecule - that makes up about 25 to 35% of all the proteins in our body. It's mostly found in connective tissue; things like tendons, muscle and skin. The word collagen comes from Greek and means as much as "glue producing." This is because back in the day skin from mammals would be burned and turned into glue. Collagen is what makes our skin elastic, firm and, well, pretty! Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but as we get older this amount becomes less and less, declining with about 1% a year. Things like smoking, sun damage and a bad diet dramatically increase this number though, so be sure to read our articles on sun protection and foods for beautiful skin.

collagen young and old skin - spa sophia venice ca los angelesDo Collagen Creams Really Work?

Most collagen creams on the market that contain collagen are good for moisturization and a quick skin boost, but don't actually increase collagen in the skin. This is because collagen is a large molecule that doesn't easily penetrate the skin. Collagen molecules are sometimes made smaller by products though, so they can penetrate the skin somewhat better. But even then there's a good chance your body sees the collagen as a foreign intruder, and creates an allergic reaction. Because of this most collagen creams don't have the collagen facial benefits.

While creams that contain collagen usually don't have the advertised anti-aging benefits, creams that boost your skin's own collagen production do work. That's why Spa Sophia only uses collagen boosting creams, and why our collagen facial benefits your skin much more than regular collagen creams.

What is a Collagen Facial?

Spa Sophia's Intraceuticals Oxygen Collagen Booster Facial starts with a cleanse and skin analysis. After this we use our airbrush to gently infuse oxygen, vitamins and Intraceutiacals' Collagen Booster to the deeper layers of the skin. Intraceuticals' Collagen Booster contains collagen messenger peptides that signal your skin to increase collagen production. Next we'll give your face a lovely massage for increased blood circulation. And last but not least, we use some finishing products for moisturization.

What Are the Collagen Facial Benefits?

Because our collagen facial uses collagen boosting products rather than creams that contain collagen, collagen in the skin actually increases, especially with repeated treatments. The exfoliation beforehand thins the outer layer of your skin, which helps it absorb the collagen booster cream better. The massage and moisturization give you a more even and glowing complexion. Another one of the collagen facial benefits is that the procedure isn't painful. Effects are immediate, which makes it a perfect facial to do before an event or photoshoot!

Microcurrent Facials: How Does It Work & What Are The Benfits?

Spa Sophia is always looking for the latest inventions and trends in the beauty industry, but we don't just jump on any new treatment. We carefully review them to determine if they're right for our clients. That's why we're proud to announce that we're now offering microcurrent facials in our Los Angeles spa. The Microcurrent Facial or "Electric Facial" has quickly become known as the 5 minute facelift, and has gotten the support of even the most skeptical estheticians. Want to know what exactly a microcurrent facial is, and what the benefits are? Read on!

What is a Microcurrent Facial

A microcurrent treatment, also known as microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation, consists of gentle electric stimulation of muscles and tissue. During a microcurrent facial your skin cells as well as facial muscles will be targeted to tone and rejuvenate your face.

How Does a Microcurrent Facial Work?

Electric stimulation will make your facial muscles more taut, much like muscles in your body after a workout. This leads to a firmer skin and toned facial features. Gentle electric current is also known to increase blood circulation, production of collagen and elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. Glyco-what? Glycosaminoglycans, also known as "GAGs," are large carbohydrates that encompasses proteins like collagen and elastin, and are responsible for a skin elasticity and firmness. On top of that electric stimulation has been shown to increase cell regeneration.

What Are the Microcurrent Facial Benefits?

Microcurrent Facials are painless procedures (if they're done by trained estheticians that is, such as the ladies at Spa Sophia) and the effects last for about 48 hours. This makes them perfect for special events. The toned and taut facial muscles make you look younger and more awake, as does the more even skin complexion caused by increased blood circulation.

On top of that, regular treatments lead to long term benefits, such as improved skin structure and elasticity. A skilled esthetician can even sculpt your face to achieve things like more facial symmetry, or more arched brows. Microcurrent facials are therefore sometimes recommended by plastic surgeons as a non invasive alternative to botox injections. But microcurrent facials can also enhance botox treatment, if timing and muscle targeting is well coordinated.

How Often Should I Get a Microcurrent Facial?

Microcurrent facials can be done at anytime before a special event, but to enjoy the long term rejuvenating results, treatments at regular intervals are recommended. We suggest starting with six or seven consecutive weekly visits, and then once doing a microcurrent facial once a month.

Want to get a microcurrent facial? Book Spa Sophia's Anti-Aging Facial or microcurrent facial add-on online or by calling (310) 564 6676.

The Many Benefits of Microdermabrasion Facials

microdermabrasion facial benefitsSpa Sophia is proud to be able to offer its Los Angeles clients microdermabrasion facials. A microdermabrasion is a deep exfoliation of epidermal skin cells with the help of tiny crystals. Spa Sophia uses only the latest technology for microdermabrasion facials: a diamond tip microdermabrasion machine. On top of the regular microdermabrasion benefits, the diamond tip microdermabrasion machine offers perks such as less discomfort and recovery time. Want to know how why we're such a fan of microdermabrasion facials? Here are eight great microdermabrasion benefits...

Microdermabrasion Leads To A More Even Skin Tone

The tiny crystals used in microdermabrasion strategically remove cells from the stratum corneum layer of your outer skin, the epridermis (read more about the layers of your skin here.) The function of the stratum corneum is to provide a barrier between the deeper layers of your skin and the outside world. As such most sun damage, hyperpigmentation and blemishes lie within the stratum coreneum. Your body interprets the microdermabrasion's removal of stratum corneum cells as if you have a wound, and so rushes to replace it with new and healthy cells, which leads to a more even skin tone.

Microdermabrasion Leads To Less Pronounced Wrinkles

Microdermabrasion benefits the aging skin as well. Due to new and healthy cells replacing old ones, skin texture is refined and fine lines and wrinkles become less pronounced. And while microdermabrasion only touches the outer layer of the skin, it puts the inner layers to work, leading to a stimulation of collagen-producing cells. The result is a smoother, younger skin surface.

Microdermabrasion Is For All Skintypes and Skintones

Treatments like chemical peels and dermabrasion - an aggressive treatment that's only performed in hospitals - can lead to discoloration, and are therefore not suited for darker skintones. Microdermabrasion is much more gentle though, and perfectly suitable for every skintype and every skintone. On top of that Spa Sophia's estheticians adjust the intensity of the treatment to your individual skin characteristics and needs.

microdermabrasion stratum corneum epidermis skin anatomyMicrodermabrasion Isn't Painful

Like we mentioned earlier, many treatments that target the outer skin layers are very aggressive, and therefore painful. Dermabrasion for example requires patients to take numbing medicine. Microdermabrasion facials are gentle though, and don't lead to discomfort or pain.

There's Little Downtime

One of the great microdermabrasion benefits is that there's very little downtime. Dermabrasions have a recovery time of up to ten days, where you can't smoke, drink, take aspirin, ibuprofen or get in the sun. Dermabrasions also require follow-up appointments, and skin redness usually doesn't fade until two weeks later. By comparison the downtime for microdermabrasions is only 24 hours. After that you can go about your business as usual, including applying make up.

Microdermabrasion Has No Side Effects

Microdermabrasion facials don't have any scary complications such as permanent discoloration, scarring and infection. The only thing that can happen is irritation in your eyes from the crystals. Which is why you should keep them close, you naughty!

Creams & Moisturizers Are More Effective

Because the stratum corneum layer of your skin is gone, moisturizers and creams penterate the skin better and thus are fare more effective than usual. On top of that Spa Sophia only uses carefully selected products from gentle, high-end brands, so you get the best results.

Microdermabrasion Can Lead To Long Term Skin Improvements

If you get microdermabrasion facials at regular intervals, you might reap some amazing long term microdermabrasion benefits. Recent research has shown that repeated microdermabrasion treatments may influence the way the deeper layers of your skin grow, removing deeper skin problems over time.

The 5 Biggest Oxygen Facial Benefits

oxygen facial benefits intraceuticalsSpa Sophia is proud to offer the Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial, also known as the "red carpet facial." Made famous by Madonna, the oxygen facial is a celebrity favorite, especially popular with actors right before they have to appear on HD cameras or at red carpet events. But what is the oxygen facial exactly, and why is it so popular? Let Spa Sophia explain all about the oxygen facial benefits... The oxygen facial consists of a painless, non-invasive application of pure oxygen, vitamins, moisturizer and anti-oxidants to the skin through an airbrush. In combination with a mask containing hyaluronic acid, the oxygen facial achieves a great number of beauty benefits. These are the biggest:

1. There are No Side Effects

Since the oxygen and nutrients are atom sized and applied through an airbrush, the oxygen facial is a completely painless and non-invasive procedure. In contrast to some other facials, the oxygen facials therefore doesn't come with any side-effects.

2. Results are Immediate

The results of an oxygen facial are immediately visible, which is why it's so popular with actors and other celebrities. No more waiting for redness or blotchiness to fade.

3. It's a Great Foundation for Make-Up

An oxygen facial makes your skin a lot smoother and softer, which makes it a perfect foundation for applying make-up. Unlike many other facials that  require you to stay make-up free for at least 24 hours, the oxygen facial allows for make-up to be applied right away.

4. Your Skin Looks Younger & Smoother

The pure oxygen that's applied to your skin increases its absorption of nutrients and anti-oxidants, as well as hyaluronic acid. The application of a hyaluronic acid solution is part of the oxygen facial, and increases moisture absorption of your skin. All these things lead to a skin that's more plump and less wrinkly, making you look younger and your complexion brighter.

5. It Increases Collagen Production

The airbrush application of oxygen to the skin increases blood circulation, which in turn is believed to increase collagen production. As many beauty fans already know, collagen is a main component of youthful looking skin. It's like a glue that increases skin elasticity and firmness. As we grow older we lose collagen proteins, which is why we develop wrinkles, so the boost in collagen production is a great benefit!
